Isotope Dog Supreme

Tomorrow might be the official start of fall (which next to spring and winter, is my absolute favorite season) but that means you’ve got one last day to enjoy a summer themed meal. And what says summer (and boredom, if you’re sober) more than baseball? Besides the Isotope Dog Supreme, the Springfield Isotopes have the following items for sale at baseball games: Hot Dogs, Pork Chops and Applesauce, and Peking Duck. That’s a pretty impressive menu, but I just want to focus on the Isotope Dog Supreme for today. Maybe Peking Duck another time.

There are a lot of components to this hot dog, but I actually enjoyed researching the different toppings – I didn’t even know Mango Lime Salsa existed before starting this recipe! Basically this is the opposite of “surprise me” when it comes to hot dog toppings.

Ingredients

Mesquite Grilled Onions

  • Onions
  • Mesquite Chips (Mesquite Tire optional)

Jalapeno Relish

  • 2 jalapeno peppers
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1-2 pickling cucumbers
  • 1/4 cup cilantro
  • 1/2 Tomato
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Mango Lime Salsa

  • 1 cup mango
  • 1/8 cup red onion
  • 1/2 jalapeno peppers
  • 3 Tbsp cilantro
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/8 cup lime juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Mesquite Grilled Onions

Slice onions lengthwise and grill with mesquite for about 3-5 minutes. Depending on how well done you like your onions you can adjust this time.

Jalapeno Relish

Chop jalapeno pepper, onion, cucumber, tomato and cilantro and mix together. Add vinegar and lemon juice; salt and pepper to taste. The longer you let this sit the more “relish-like” it will become.

Mango Lime Salsa

Chop mango, red onion, jalapeno and cilantro. Add vinegar and lime juice; salt and pepper to taste. This salsa is best served fresh.

So I created the Isotope Dog Supreme in the same fashion as it was presented in the episode, but this is not really the best way to enjoy it. I mean, who would eat a hot dog and put mustard on only a third of it? So right after I took my picture I moved everything around to create a more even taste.

The Mesquite Grilled Onions and Mango Lime Salsa were very nice, while the Jalapeno Relish was pretty spicy. I know that some people like to define themselves by how they can handle eating really spicy foods, but I am not one of those people. Eating chopped up jalapenos on a hot dog is not something I enjoyed for I am NOT the Mayor of  Albuquerque!
