Happy Birthday Magaggie Cake

Has it really been one year? Yes it has. Has it? Yes. In honor of the blog turning one year old, I made a Happy Birthday Magaggie Cake. Kind of. I mean, I tried to make it but it didn’t turn out exactly like I wanted.

It is clear that Homer is physically picking up the cake pieces and eating them, so I knew this wasn’t icing. No, this was fondant and fondant is the worst creation in the history of mankind. In this episode we don’t actually get to see Maggie eat her own cake so I wasn’t clear on what kind of cake it was. I went with chocolate because, unlike fondant, chocolate is delicious.

Ingredients

Cake

  • 2 cups Flour
  • 1 cup Cocoa
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract
  • ~3/4 cup boiling water (depending on consistency)

Frosting and Letters

  • 1 cup Butter
  • 3 cups Icing Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract
  • Food coloring
  • Fondant

Directions

Cake

Set oven to 375F. Grease two 9 inch pans. Mix all dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, baking powder, cocoa, sugar and salt). Add eggs, milk, oil and vanilla extract. Be careful with the water! If the mixture is becoming too runny, don’t add the full amount. Pour into two pans and bake for 30-40 minutes.

Frosting and Letters

Combine butter, icing sugar and vanilla extract into a stand mixer and mix until consistent. Add food coloring until you reach desired color. Arrange fondant on a floured surface. Painstakingly cut out the letters and curse the person who created this vile substance.

I realize that my cake doesn’t look exactly like the cake from The Simpsons because the letters aren’t different colors. Don’t know if I’ve mentioned this yet, but fondant tastes terrible and you shouldn’t eat it. Also it’s expensive. No way was I going to buy multiple fondants that would likely never be used again. However, the rest of the cake was fantastic because really, what’s not to like about a chocolate cake. Happy Birthday Magaggie!

‘Round here we have cake decorations made of crunchy candy. You can often buy alphabet packs. Putting them on the cake is probably the easiest part, you just peel them off the card and stick them on the cake.

Ok, I will find these candy decorations and I will make another cake!
