Movementarian Lima Beans
Homer: These lima beans are even better than the ones we had for breakfast and lunch! Oh! A lima bean that looks just like the Leader! I’ll put it with the others.
– The Joy of Sect
The Simpsons | Season 9 - Episode 13
If you recall this episode well (and I certainly hope you do because it’s hilarious), you might remember that Homer apparently ate an “entire month’s supply” of the Movementarians low-protein gruel. So they were likely forced to switch to he Movementarian Lima Beans as a way to feed their growing religious organization. Sometimes it’s the little details, you know? On a completely related note, are lima beans gross?
Bart: May I have some more lima beans, please?
Bart: More than that.
Bart: More. More. More.
Lisa: Uh, maybe you should eat the ones you have.
Bart: I didn’t say I was gonna eat them. I just wanted to look at them because they’re so gross. What’s for dessert?
– My Sister, My Sitter (The Simpsons Season 8 – Episode 17)
I would argue that lima beans are not gross when prepared correctly, for example I quite enjoy them sauteed with a little butter and garlic. However, eating a giant bowl of plain lima beans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner does not sound appetizing. But it is quite a clever way to prevent people from having the energy to escape from giant marauding bubbles. Again, kudos to the Movementarians for knowing how to run a pretty tight organization.
- Lima Beans (I used baby lima beans)
In this episode the lima beans were picked by hand, so we will use dried beans over canned for authenticity sake. Dried beans need to be sorted, rinsed and soaked before they can be cooked. I prefer the “hot soak method” wherein you heat beans to boiling for a few minutes, remove from heat and cover, then soak overnight. You can soak your beans however you see fit, but it’s best to soak them for at least 4 hours. Once the beans have soaked they are ready to cook! I highly doubt the Movementarians provide any kind of seasoning to their lima beans, so I just added some salt to the water and boiled them for 20 minutes until they were soft to eat.
The beans were not particularly tasty as a meal option for breakfast, lunch or dinner. However, I did manage to find a few beans that looked a lot like a certain leader…
