I think we can all assume, based on how critical Llewelyn Sinclair is, that Marge’s Peanut Butter Brownies are most likely not banal at all. How can you go wrong with chocolate and peanut butter? I based my recipe on this one, with some variations in sugar type and salt. Also, the recipe called for chocolate chips and peanut butter chips, but I just used peanut butter chips to ramp up the rich, creamery peanut butteryness.
Ingredients
Brownie
- 1/2 cup salted butter
- 8 ounces chopped semi-sweet chocolate
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- Half a bag of peanut butter chips
Peanut Butter Filling
- 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 Tablespoons milk
Directions
Melt the butter and semi-sweet chocolate over low heat in a saucepan. Once it has melted, allow it to cool. Meanwhile, make the peanut butter filling. Combine peanut butter, sugar, vanilla extract and milk and mix with a handheld (or stand) mixer. Set aside. For the brownie mixture, add white and brown sugar into the cooled chocolate. Next add eggs and vanilla extract. Add flour and cocoa powder and mix evenly.
Pour half the brownie batter into a greased 9×9 inch pan. Add peanut butter filling, then the rest of the brownie mixture. Finally, top with half a bag of peanut butter chips. Voila! Peanut Butter Brownies.
You will notice, oh reasonable reader, that I did not follow my own directions and I placed the brownies into a pan lined with aluminum. In all my years of baking, I’ve actually never done this but the original recipe called for it and I decided to give it a try. It was not a success. The lesson here is: never try. Did the brownies taste banal? No they did not, but they certainly looked like the crumbling facade of a desperate southern Belle’s face, so let’s pretend I did the aluminium foil lining on purpose for this recipe to be extra meta.
