Marshmallow squares make a few appearances in early seasons of The Simpsons. Which is important to note because early on they are specifically called Marshmallow Squares and NOT Rice Krispie Squares, which makes me think of a novelty flying disc for some reason…
Mr. Burns: Hello, Simpson. My lawyers and I were in the neighborhood and thought we’d stop by.
Marge: Would you like to come in for tea and marshmallow squares?
Lawyers: [Murmuring] Yes, he would.
– Homer Goes to College (The Simpsons Season 5 – Episode 3)
But just two seasons later and the show has dropped all pretense of avoiding copyright infringement and made the switch from marshmallow squares to rice krispie squares:
Ben: Pretty cool of your mom to let us hang out here.
Dean: Totally.
Erin: Not like my mom. She’d be butting in with Rice Krispie squares and Tang.
– Summer of 4 Ft. 2 (The Simpsons Season 7 – Episode 25)
Marshmallow Squares or Rice Krispie Squares, the rule is the same: do NOT follow the Kelloggs recipe because the ratio of marshmallows to cereal (6 cups cereal to 1 package marshmallows) results in a dry square. I think Marge would put more love into her rice krispie squares and so the ratio that I use is 6 cups cereal to 1 bag marshmallows AND half a bag of mini marshmallows. According to a scientian (uhhh) I know, that means it’s much healthier.
Ingredients
- 6 Cups Rice Krispies cereal
- 1 Bag of Marshmallows
- 1/2 Bag of Mini Marshmallows
- 1/4 Cup of Butter
Directions
Make sure your saucepan is large enough for both the marshmallows and the Rice Krispie cereal, because you will cook everything in one pot. Heat a large saucepan on low heat and add butter, then slowly add large marshmallows half a dozen at a time. Melt the large marshmallows until they are completely liquid, then add all smaller marshmallows immediately after. These should not be melted. Immediately add Rice Krispies into the still hot mixture. Quickly combine ingredients before pouring into a well-buttered pan.
Call them whatever you like, because either way they are delicious! After all, bake sale customers don’t waste their time on oatmeal cookies, they go for the good stuff.
