I scoured many a thrift store in search of the perfect waffle iron for this recipe. By “perfect” I mean the waffle iron needed to be under $10 and non-stick. I would have preferred a circular waffle iron since that’s what Homer uses to make his Patented Space-Age Out of This World Moon Waffles, but in the end I couldn’t find one. But, the waffle iron I did get cost $5 so if I ruined it I wouldn’t feel that bad. I took the iron for a test waffle and made some regular waffles with regular waffle batter (stop saying waffle!) and all went well. It was time for things to get real.
Ingredients
- 1 Bag of Caramels
- Waffle Batter
- 1 ounce liquid smoke
- 1 Stick of Butter
Directions
Preheat waffle iron. Place caramels onto waffle iron immediately followed by waffle batter and liquid smoke. Since sticking together is what good waffles do, make sure you use enough batter to ensure this happens. Close waffle iron and wait until the Patented Space-Age Out of This World Moon Waffle is almost burned. Peel off waffle iron and serve wrapped around a stick of butter.
It’s subtle because the scene only lasts for a few seconds, but later in the episode you can see that Marge is angrily cleaning out the waffle iron:
And now I know why.
You know what don’t mix well together? Waffle irons and molten caramel. In fact, that combination creates a sticky mess that is a giant pain in the ass to clean.
Apart from the cleaning element though, these waffles tasted pretty good. I don’t think I used enough liquid smoke since I couldn’t taste it, even though my entire house reeked of the stuff as the waffle was cooking. However, I could taste the caramel mixed with the batter which made for a very sweet waffle. Less sweet was the butter which overpowered the whole thing. I only tried it for a single bite because eating that much butter is probably not a good idea.
