To a Whale of a Wife Cake

Several years ago a friend asked me if I wanted to take a cake decorating class at Michael’s, which I did. However, my skills in areas such as “being thorough” and “paying attention” may have hindered my chances of truly excelling in the class. Despite my less than stellar performance, I got a certificate. Although, I think everyone gets one if they show up to most of the classes. But I’m going to say it’s because I had such raw, untapped cake decorating potential. It was finally time for me to make the To a Whale of a Wife Cake.

Since the focus of this recipe is all in the cake decorating, I decided to make things easier and I just bought a ready mix cake and icing. I also want to emphasize that I honestly did try to make this look somewhat like the cake from the episode. If you would like to see some examples of people who were more successful at making this cake then I was, uh, you can find them.

Ingredients

  • Cake Mix
  • Cake Icing
  • Blue Food Coloring

Directions

Follow the directions on the side of the box to prepare and bake the cake. Remove from oven, then place the cake onto a wire rack until it is fully cooled before any decorating. Cut the cake into a whale shape. Mix cake icing with blue food coloring until it reaches desired color. Ice the cake with the blue icing before adding the white outline and wording.

Did I mention that I really tried with this recipe? Because I feel that it bears repeating. The biggest issue I ran into was getting the blue icing smooth because I was getting crumbs everywhere from cutting the edges of the cake into the whale shape. The second issue I ran into was fitting coherent text onto the whale surface, because there wasn’t a whole lot of room to work with.

Overall, I’m not unhappy with the cake. I just wish that I magically had the ability to decorate cakes like a professional, without having to put in the years of training and education that comes with those abilities. On the plus side, the cake tasted great! If my blog is proof of anything it’s that my horrible looking food sometimes tastes good.
