Mr. Burns Welcome Homer Cake

I thought I’d be able to find other examples of Mr. Burns Welcome Homer Cake online, but sadly I could only find examples of a cake that LOOKED like it. Pssh, amateurs. Being the dedicated Simpsons recipe re-creator that I am, I needed to somehow make a cake that both looked and tasted as authentic as possible.

A standard cake batter usually involves a combination of flour, butter, sugar, eggs and a few other items. Mr. Burns Welcome Homer Cake doesn’t look like is rose correctly, which suggests too much baking powder. So rather than using say 1 teaspoon, I added 6 tablespoons. I also figured that since Mr. Burns would assume figs are sweet (despite the pickling) he wouldn’t include much sugar so I didn’t either.

Ingredients

Fig Pickling

  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar

Cake Batter

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 6 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup pickled figs

Icing

  • Icing sugar
  • Water
  • Food coloring

Directions

Boil water and add vinegar, sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Immediately add figs and set aside for at least half an hour.

Pickled Figs

Mix dry ingredients and set aside. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Next, add vanilla extract and eggs, one at a time. Finally add milk and mix until well combined. Slowly add dry ingredients. Drain figs from pickle brine and add to cake batter. Bake cake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown.

As I’ve proven on previous occasions, icing cakes isn’t really my strongest skill. However, I think that the icing for this cake was not that bad. Also surprising is that this cake didn’t taste as terrible as I thought it would. Let me be clear, I mean the cake part. Any bite that included a pickled fig was just awful. And I would guess that Smithers’ reaction to eating the cake came from a pickled fig bite too. But, the cake was ok. I guess I needed to include curdled milk or something? Open to suggestions on what I could have done to make this less appealing for the batter.

In conclusion: don’t pickle figs and don’t add pickled figs to your baking.

The moment where Smithers tries the cake and goes “Ugh!” is one of my favourite bits of Simpsons animation and voice acting ever. It cracks me up every time. I hope your expression was as comical when trying this!

You know it! I actually think I could have made this more gross to truly a elicit that kind of response.
